Spanish National Police physical tests: the plan to score high in the circuit, the bar and the 1,000 m

On the Basic Scale the fitness score counts towards the final ranking: every point matters. The plan trains the circuit, the pull-ups or the hang and the 1,000 m to the board's standard, and tells you at every mock test what you would score.

What are the Spanish National Police physical tests?

The physical tests for the Basic Scale of Spain's National Police (Policía Nacional) are three, always in the same order: agility circuit, bar and 1,000 metres. The bar test depends on your sex: men do pull-ups and women a flexed-arm hang. The marks and scoring table are those of the latest call (Resolution of 7 July 2026, BOE no. 167, annex II).

Each test scores 0 to 10 on a table by sex. To pass you need an average of 5, and a 0 in any test eliminates you even if the average is enough. What makes this scale special is that the fitness score is not just a pass: it is added to the knowledge exam for the final ranking, and ties are broken by the knowledge test, then the fitness score, then the circuit. An average of 7 instead of 5 is two points that weigh on the list.

The marks that matter most, to give you an idea:

  • Circuit: 5 points at 10.5 s for men and 11.6 s for women; 10 points at 8.2 and 9.3 s. At 11.7 s or more (men) or 12.8 s or more (women) it is a 0.
  • Pull-ups: 10 reps are a 5 and 17 a 10; fewer than 5 is a 0.
  • Flexed-arm hang: 57 seconds are a 5 and 95 a 10; under 36, a 0.
  • 1,000 m: 5 points at 3:24 for men and 4:09 for women; 10 points at 2:54 and 3:24.

The circuit is the route the BOE publishes in its diagram: two hurdles 6 metres apart, 1.20 m between posts with the bar at 0.72 m (0.65 m clear underneath), and halfway two posts 3 metres from each other. You start standing to one side of the start hurdle, go round the first post, pass under the far hurdle, go round the other post, jump over the start hurdle and sprint the last 6 metres to jump the far one. Time stops when you land. It is void if you change the route or knock over, lean on or grab a hurdle or a post, and there is a second attempt only if the first one is void.

Pull-ups use an overhand grip slightly wider than the shoulders; each rep starts from fully straight arms with a still body, and the chin must clearly pass the bar. No swinging or kipping, no letting go with one hand and no hanging more than 5 seconds between reps. The flexed-arm hang uses an underhand grip, chin above the bar and a still body; time stops when the chin touches the bar or drops below it. No gloves or chalk in either.

    • The chin clearly passes the bar, which ends at the lower third of the neck.
    • A small pause between reps: no bouncing.
  • Flexed-arm hang

    Attempts: One attempt.

    • Underhand grip (palms towards you), arms bent and chin above the bar.
    • Body straight and still: no hip flexion, no swinging.
    • Head in a normal position: it may not be tilted back.
    • It ends when the chin drops to the bar, below it, or touches it.
  • 1,000 m run

Attempts: One attempt, in a group.

    • In a group, on a smooth, flat, hard surface.
    • Sports shoes, no spikes.
    • Leaving the running area or unsporting behaviour eliminates you.

What else they ask for

  • Medical certificate on the Medical Associations' form, handed in on test day. Without it, you are out.
  • The board may run doping controls (saliva, blood or urine): testing positive or refusing excludes you.
  • The medical exam comes later: BMI between 18 and 28 (more is accepted if it is muscle) and blood pressure below 140/90.

How the plan works

Your AI-generated plan

You choose the National Police and the Basic Scale, your sex, the exam date if you know it and today's marks. The app shows you the points for each test and your average straight away, and splits the work by what you are missing: if your bar is at 3 and your 1,000 m at 7, the bar gets more sessions than the run.

A typical four-day week has a circuit session (hurdle and turn technique, and full timed reps with long rests), an interval session for the 1,000 m (6 to 9 × 400 m in the base, 4 to 6 × 800 m in development and 500 m at exam pace at the end), a strength session with the exam bar and an easy run with strides. The bar shows up in several sessions a week in small doses, far from failure: pull-ups improve more with frequency than with one all-out session.

The bar starts at your step. If you can't do a pull-up today, the plan starts with passive hangs and five-second negatives; if you can do a few, negatives, band-assisted pull-ups and one or two strict reps per set; if you can already do plenty, volume of clean reps and, later on, weighted pull-ups. At the end of every peak week, one max set to the board's standard to measure. The hang works the same way: hanging, holds halfway up and full hang sets.

The circuit can be set up at home: two chairs and a broomstick at 65 cm to go under, a 72 cm obstacle to jump and two bottles 3 metres apart, in a 3 by 6 metre rectangle. Every session shows the diagram to scale with the BOE measurements.

Every five weeks, a mock test in the official order (circuit, bar and 1,000 m) with its rules and 8-10 minutes between tests. The app gives you your score and compares it with the previous one. In exam week the volume drops, there is a short activation two days before and the day before is free.

From today to the exam, week by week

With the exam date, the plan counts backwards: base, development, exam pace and taper. Every five weeks, a deload with a mock test under the official protocol.

Mock test· Exam

  • Base: learn the tests and build the engine. Easy runs and aerobic intervals, the circuit in parts, and bar or push-up progressions from your rung.
  • Development: aerobic power and speed. Long intervals at 3K pace, the full circuit flat out and more reps to the board's standard.
  • Specific: exam pace. Intervals at your target pace, the circuit under exam conditions and bar sets like the board's.
  • Taper. Less volume, same intensity: arrive fresh without losing the edge.
  • Exam week. Short activation, rest the day before and everything ready for test day.

Without an exam date, the plan moves through base, development and exam pace, with a mock test every five weeks, and reshuffles the phases as soon as you set the date.

Who is this plan for?

  • Men and women on the Basic Scale, with or without marks: if you don't know how many pull-ups you can do or how fast you run 1,000 m, the first week brings an initial assessment.

  • Those who pass narrowly and want a higher score: every extra point counts in the ranking. The plan shows you the mark you need for the next point in each test, which is usually closer in the bar and the circuit than in the run.

  • Those stuck on a 0: the plan makes it the priority. A 0 in pull-ups (fewer than 5) or in the circuit (11.7 s or more) is the first thing to clear.

  • If you are applying for the Executive Scale, the tests and table are the same but count as a pass: it has its own page.

These examples are real extracts from the EntrenAI planning engine. Your personal plan adjusts to your level, equipment and availability.

Equipment needed

EntrenAI automatically substitutes any exercise if you don’t have the gear.

  • A track or a measured 400 m loop for the 1,000 m intervals
  • Two hurdles or two chairs with a broomstick at 65 and 72 cm, and two cones or bottles, for the circuit
  • A pull-up bar: a door-frame one works at home; train without gloves or chalk, as in the exam
  • A pull-up resistance band if you can't do 5 reps yet
  • The stopwatch on your phone and someone who times the circuit the way the board would
Common mistakes

What most people get wrong (and how to avoid it)

  1. 1

Counting pull-ups the board won't count

A rep that doesn't start from straight arms, doesn't clear the chin or uses leg drive doesn't count. On exam day you notice the difference between 12 gym pull-ups and 12 board pull-ups. The plan trains them to that standard from day one.

  2. 2

    Leaving the circuit for last

It is the first test and the one that pays the most points per second: going from 10.5 to 9.7 s is two points, and it usually costs less than taking 12 seconds off the 1,000 m. And if you tie on the knowledge test and the fitness score in the ranking, the next tie-breaker is the circuit.

  3. 3

    Braking before the hurdle

The take-off step is made well away from the hurdle. Braking to jump costs time at every hurdle and risks knocking it over. The plan trains going over and under separately before putting them together.

  4. 4

Going flat out in the 1,000 m

It is run in a group and it is easy to go with whoever is in front. Running the first 400 m two seconds faster than your pace is paid for on the last lap. The intervals are at your target pace so it is in your legs.

  5. 5

Knowing the average but not the zeros

An average of 6 with a 0 in the bar is a fail. The plan orders the tests by what earns you the most: a 0 always comes first, then anything below 5 and whatever can gain the most points in a cycle.

  6. 6

Turning up without the medical certificate

The medical certificate on the Colegios de Médicos form is handed in on test day and without it you don't get in. The board may also run a doping control, and afterwards comes the medical check with a BMI between 18 and 28 and blood pressure below 140/90.

Frequently asked questions

10 pull-ups score a 5; 5 score a 1, and fewer is a 0 and you are out. The 10 is at 17. But the score is the average of the three tests, so you can pass with fewer than 10 pull-ups if the circuit and the 1,000 m make up for it, as long as it is not a 0.

57 seconds are a 5 and 95 a 10. Under 36 seconds is a 0. The clock runs with the chin above the bar and stops when it touches the bar or drops below it; the head may not be tilted back.

For a 5, 3:24 for men and 4:09 for women. For a 10, 2:54 and 3:24. It is run in a group on a smooth, flat, hard surface, in shoes without spikes.

You get a second attempt only if the first one is void. It is void if you change the route in the diagram, or knock over, lean on or grab a hurdle or a post. A slow time is not void: it counts as it is.

Yes, that is allowed. What is not allowed is swinging or kipping, letting go with one hand, hanging more than 5 seconds between reps, or using gloves, chalk or anything that helps the grip.

On the Basic Scale, yes: it is added to the knowledge exam for the final ranking. Ties are broken by the knowledge test first, then the fitness score, then the circuit. On the Executive Scale it doesn't add up: it is pass or fail.

Almost everything. The circuit can be set up with two chairs, a broomstick and two bottles; the bar can be a door-frame one; and the 1,000 m intervals work on any measured loop. The plan gives you each session in the version you can do.
